Tomasz Strahl

He studied cello with Kazimierz Michalik at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, from which he graduated in 1989. He then continued his studies with Tobias Kühne in a one-year postgraduate course at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. He honed his skills at master classes in Weimar, Łańcut and Warsaw under Miloš Sadlo, Daniel Szafran and Roman Jablonski. He also worked under Krzysztof Jakowicz, deepening his knowledge of chamber music.

He has performed with the Polish Radio Grand Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Polish Chamber Orchestra, the Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra "Amadeus", the Polish Radio Orchestra, Sinfonietta Cracovia, the chamber orchestra Concerto Avenna and almost all philharmonics in Poland under the baton of such conductors as Agnieszka Duczmal, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Łukasz Borowicz, Tomasz Bugaj, Henryk Czyż, Philippe Entremont, José Maria Florêncio Junior, Czesław Grabowski, Jerzy Kosek, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Wojciech Michniewski, Marcin Nałęcz-Niesiołowski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Marek Pijarowski, Paweł Przytocki, Zygmunt Rychert, Jerzy Salwarowski, Tadeusz Strugała, Jerzy Swoboda, Tadeusz Wojciechowski and Sławek A. Wróblewski. He collaborates with Krzysztof Jakowicz, the Wilanów Quartet, the Silesian Quartet, the Royal String Quartet and the Prima Vista Quartet. Together with pianist Krzysztof Jabłoński, he co-founded the Chopin Duo.

In 1993, he performed Witold Lutosławski's Cello Concerto in the presence of the composer under the baton of Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk. In 2005, he performed at the Polish premiere of Piotr Moss's Cello Concerto No. 2 during the Festival of First Performances, together with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has given concerts in Finland, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Belarus, in Kuwait and Israel, as well as in Canada and Japan. Tomasz Strahl gives masterclasses in Poland, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany and Japan.

He has held the title of professor since 2001. He teaches cello at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. He served as Vice-Dean and in 2012 was elected Dean of the Faculty of Instrumental Studies at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music for a four-year term. He has made numerous recordings for Polish Radio, CBC Radio in Canada and Polish Television. His discography includes a number of albums of solo and chamber music, recorded for many labels at home and abroad.
